Accent modification is one of our favorite areas. The practice founder is a lover of languages and accents and has developed expertise in assisting teens and adults to achieve their accent goals, whether to sound more like a standard American speaker, to speak a specific American dialect (such as New York) or simply to be understood better. She has shared this expertise with the other therapists at the practice, resulting in a strong accent modification/reduction program.
We have worked with individuals from a variety of countries, as well as different areas of the United States. Previous accent clients have included actors, salespeople, business people, doctors, accountants, and others, assisting them in their career and personal goals.
Accent modification is a specialized type of speech therapy, where the speech therapist helps clients learn the sounds of the accent they would like to use. It is the only type of speech therapy where the client does not have a disability or a "problem" with the way they speak but would simply like to speak differently. Some clients have a certain person in mind that they would like to emulate, such as actors or newscasters, while other clients would just like people to stop asking where they are from or asking them to repeat themselves.
Annie's methods for accent modification are calculated to result in lasting change to one's way of speaking. Each client's program is customized to target the sounds they most need to learn or improve in order to speak in the way they desire. Clients work on word lists, reading, and speaking to practice the sounds they are learning. In the early sessions, clients work on listening to and identifying sounds in words, so that they develop the skills necessary to learn and sustain their new way of speaking.
While accent modification, like all types of therapy, can never be guaranteed, all of our clients so far have made lasting changes to the way they speak.
Individuals interested in changing their accent can call, text, or email using the contact info below. Sessions can be conducted on our secure virtual therapy platform for clients not in the area.
Note that the therapists speak the following languages:
All of the therapists have knowledge of the sound systems of other languages and can help clients from any language background.
